Object Name Chatelaine
Description Chatelaine clasp of metal plate, prob silver plated. 1)A woman's ornamental clasp worn at the waist w/keys, purse etc suspended from chain. Brooch-shaped clasp, prob shaped in a stamp press. Face has raised floral plume design, prob Victorian around edges. Back has 1 large clasp for hooking over belt and a smaller clasp for suspending chain. 2)Absence of hallmarking was common in mid-1800s to avoid legal standards. 1)They were fashionable in this country at various times; notably mid and late 1800s.
Provenance Used by members of the Horseless Carriage Club of America, Tucson Chapter, during the 1950s-1980s as part of Living History Costumes. Harry Mann was charter member of club.
